Obituary

Sylvia Guest Hughes

Cowpens, SC - - Sylvia Guest Hughes, 86, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Spartanburg Medical Center. She was an amazing wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, and Mana, who was beloved by all. She was affectionately known as Mama Hughes to many.

Sylvia is survived by her daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren: Tina and Jason Martin, and their children Kathleen, Daniel, Matthew, and Rebekah; and Kim and Larry Meltzer, and their daughter, Isabella; her sister, Betty Dalton; and her brother, Buddy (Elaine) Guest. Sylvia was married for 61 years to the love of her life, the late Joe Dean Hughes, and was the daughter of the late James and Ruby Peeler Guest.

Sylvia was passionate about many things, but most important was always her family and friends. She loved to talk and never met a stranger. She would tell everyone about her children and grandchildren and was very proud of them. She attended numerous events to support, encourage, and cheer on her grandchildren. She loved flowers and spent countless hours working in her yard and flower gardens. She loved to travel, especially to the beach and the mountains, and entertaining friends and family.

Sylvia was a lifetime member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she remained actively involved in WMU and served on several committees. She was also a member of the Town and Country Garden Club of Cowpens, and the Red Hat Society.

A graduate of Gaffney High School and Cecil's Business College, Sylvia worked as a bookkeeper and teller before becoming a stay-at-home wife and mother. She also worked as a substitute teacher at Broome High School, which brought her much joy. She volunteered countless hours to give back to her community to brighten the lives of everyone she met.

The family will hold a Celebration of Life on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Cowpens. They will receive friends from 2:30 to 3:45 PM, and the service will immediately follow at 4:00 PM. Burial will be immediately following in the church cemetery.

For those who desire to make a memorial donation, the family has chosen to donate to the Women's Missionary Union (WMU) at Mt. Olive Baptist Church for their Operation Christmas Child ministry. Checks should be made payable to Mt. Olive Baptist Church (please note WMU in the memo) and mailed to Hughes Family, PO Box 1311, Cowpens, SC 29330.
