Ruby Geneva "Gennie" Masters
Gaffney, SC - - Ruby Geneva (Christopher) Masters of Gaffney, SC, aged 98, died peacefully in her sleep on August 22, 2024, after being surrounded by a host of family and friends for several days.
Born in Greenville County to the late Gildeon Bly and Fronnie Ferguson Christopher, Mrs. Masters was a graduate of Easley High School. Mrs. Masters grew up attending the Glenwood Methodist Church in Easley and was a faithful member of Limestone Street United Methodist Church in Gaffney for over 70 years.
Mrs. Masters is survived by a daughter, Kaye Masters Orr of Oak Park, IL, and grandchildren James E Masters, III, of Brooklyn, NY, Whitt (Rachel) Masters of Washington DC, Alan (Alison) Masters of Gaffney, SC, Jason Masters of Cowpens, SC, Alan Orr of Forest Park, IL, Kass Orr (Roy) Ellis of Oak Park, IL, and Kenneth Orr of Cheyenne, WY. In addition, she is survived by seven great-grandchildren: Jack, Sam, Kayla, Isaac and Henry Masters, Ruby Ellis and Danielle Orr. She also has two surviving brothers, Joe (Barbara) Christopher and Thomas Christopher of Easley, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Masters, Sr., and two sons, Alan Clark Masters and James Edward Masters, Jr. Also preceding her in death were sisters, Edith Bynum, Ann Nicholson, and Agnes Christopher and brothers, Howard Christopher and Lloyd Christopher.
After a career as a weaver at Gaffney Manufacturing Company, Mrs. Masters also worked at CB Poole and Hamrick's. Beautiful and meticulous needlework marked her retirement years. Nothing brought her more joy than making a favorite pie or other desserts, especially for her son, Jim Masters, until his death in 2023. Phone calls and visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her tremendous pleasure. She loved to see the birds playing at her kitchen window bird feeder. Having survived all her friends from her own generation, she was blessed to have developed close relationships with younger generations. A true blessing in recent years was the support and assistance provided by her friends, Mrs. Teriza Skates and Jim's business partner Mrs. Betty Roberson. David Millwood was also a friend ready to assist with a variety of chores around the house.
Services will be at Limestone Street United Methodist Church on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, with visitation at 1:00 and service at 2:00. Burial after the funeral services will be at Frederick Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Limestone Street United Methodist Church at 910 N Limestone Street, Gaffney, SC 29340.
