Obituary

Bobby Mardis

Gaffney, SC - - Bobby Thomas Mardis, 87, went home to be with the Lord on September 24, 2024 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.

Born and raised in Williamston SC, he was the loving husband of Ruth Myers Mardis for 61 years until she passed away in 2021. Bobby was the son of the late James & Marion Mardis.

He was a graduate of Palmetto High School and enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 18. There he spent 3 of his 4 years at sea; being in the Navy was a defining moment for his life and career. It was the Navy that determined his skills best matched that of a storekeeper, which in civilian life translated to being an accountant. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he pursued an accounting degree; first at a business college in Anderson, SC, and later at Southeastern University in Washington, DC while working full time providing for his family. After earning his degree he moved to Gaffney, SC to buy an existing accounting practice; he later purchased another accounting practice that he merged into his and operated until his retirement in 2021. He passed the CPA exam shortly after starting the practice in Gaffney. Becoming a CPA was another defining moment for him.

Bobby was a member of many civic, religious and other organizations over his career in Gaffney, including the Gaffney Rotary club, where he served a term as President, Treasurer of the Gaffney Day School, Deacon at First Baptist Church while a member there, and Bank Director for Southern Bank, where he was involved in its locating to Gaffney. He also served as Director and in advisory roles for other subsequent banks after Southern Bank merged with these banks. Bob and Ruth were both members of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Greer where Bob had also served as Treasurer.

Bob and Ruth loved to camp when they were able. They made multiple trips out west to see places like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and any other places of interest. While Ruth's mother (Elaine) was able, they also took her with them and their grandson Patrick.

Surviving are two sons, Dennis Mardis (Laura) of Johns Island and Perry Mardis (Malagni) of Gaffney; four grandchildren, Rob Mardis, Kate Bell (Travis), Patrick Mardis (Michelle) and Abigail Annas (Alan) three great-grandchildren, one sister, Peggy Thompson and a sister-in-law, Sandy Mardis.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday, October 4, 2024 at Blakely Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Frederick Memorial Gardens with Reverend Bill Slattery and Col. Roy Mathis officiating, with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Cherokee County Humane Society, P.O. Box 2223, Gaffney, SC, 29342.

The family will be at the home of Perry and Malagni Mardis, 113 Avondale Drive, Gaffney, SC 29341.
