He sang in the choir into his 80s and taught the adult men's Sunday School class for many years. Each Sunday afternoon, Ben would go to the nursing home to visit people. He would often ask the staff which resident had not had a recent visitor and Ben would go introduce himself and visit that person for the afternoon.
Ben loved gardening. He had a family farm where he raised his children and most years planted two acres of corn. He was known for giving strangers food from his garden and orchard. Ben loved working in his yard. He planted shrubs and flowers that he acquired from friends, nurseries, or the side of the road as he traveled along.
Ben was a charter member of Cherokee National Golf Club. He was an avid golfer well into his 80s. He won many tournaments over the years and was known as a calm golfer often sinking 30-foot putts. For over 50 years, he regularly played golf at Sunset Beach, where he loved to visit with family and friends.
Ben was known for loving Jesus, his family, and anyone he met. He had an easy manner that made others comfortable. He laughed easily and loved a good story. Ben was full of joy.
